Stem cell donation saves lives. Our student group aims to enable Ryerson students to join the Canadian Blood Services' OneMatch database -which matches possible donors to patients waiting for a stem cell donation. Stem cell donations are used for those suffering from diseases which require replacement of stem cells or bone marrow; such as, leukemia, anemia, sickle cell, and other blood diseases. A big issue in stem cell donation is the underrepresentation of certain minorities groups. Since matching works by a genetic match, the more culturally similar a person is to a patient the better chance of matching; therefore, we aim to bolster underrepresented minorities’ membership on the OneMatch registry. We also wish to increase awareness regarding hematopoietic (bone marrow) diseases and bone marrow or stem cell donations.
