All around us there are different barriers that prevent the inclusion of people on our campus; some are physical barriers like inaccessible washrooms or buildings, while others are attitudinal barriers like stereotypes about students with disabilities. RyeACCESS is one of RSU's Community Service Groups that seeks to break down barriers that students with disabilities face on campus and in society.
RyeACCESS takes action to identify the physical barriers on campus, and hosts an annual barrier labeling event making accessibility a public and community concern. Our mission is to improve accessibility, and strive for full participation and inclusion of students with disabilities in all aspects of campus life, through advocacy, education, events, campaigns and outreach initiatives.
Last Year's Initiatives:
To break down attitudinal barriers, RyeACCESS organized a series of educational events last year, including: a Week of Disability and public meetings, showing the acclaimed documentary Shameless: The Art of Disability, which highlighted how people with disabilities successfully overcome their challenges and hosting the wheel-chair for a day event.
Before RyeACCESS won its own office space in the Student Centre, it shared the office with another Community Service Group – the Working Students' Centre. After lobbying and working with the Students' Union, the group secured space for students with disabilities. This victory helped ensure that students with disabilities have a permanent space on campus.
