As a nursing student with a passion for social justice and human rights, I have spent most of my adult life challenging oppression and advocating for social equity. I am proud to be representing you on the issues that affect you daily. Together, we can challenge the rising cost of education, protect your rights and build a more equitable and inclusive campus.
Last year, our unity served us well, as it allowed us to organise a massive day of action on November 5th to call on the Provincial Government to Drop Fees. We had a Ryerson contingent of 500 strong, and signed 11,500 petitions in just a couple of months.
The result of these actions gave us enough media attention that public opinion has shifted so that more Ontarians than ever before now agree that tuition fees are too high. Locally, thanks to our hard work, we successfully split tuition fees at Ryerson and as of this fall 2009, students will be able to pay their fees in two instalments.
These successes, as well as history, show us that some of the most powerful changes have been brought on by students, and with our strength in numbers, anything is possible!
This year there will be plenty of ways to get involved, as we build up to an even bigger Day of Action on November 5th for a Poverty-Free Ontario, are visited by a province-wide Anti-Racism Task Force and raise awareness though the new Student Rights campaign at Ryerson.
